THE SPECIALIST IN CHILDREN’S MORNING DRAMAS – WANTED IMMEDIATELY

“Being a mother is tough mornings with kids you’ve never heard of before.”

This post was inspired by stories from short Instagram reels about motherhood. Of course, the funny reels that every parent is familiar with.
My daughter’s drama today involved the colour of the plate I served the toast on.
Dora is a Paw Patrol fan, and due to my lack of sleep, I put the toast on Spider-Man’s plate. The drama began with crying, screaming, and a general loss of interest in breakfast because she no longer liked toast from any other plate but the Paw Patrol one. This may seem absurd, but for us parents, it’s very common. And in such situations, mostly, I try to find my secret talent as a specialist in groundless children’s dramas.

FOOD PREFERENCES

Another story comes from a friend of mine, a mother of two, whose morning drama involved sausages. I still laugh about it when I write about it, but I know it wasn’t funny to her. Her little Kasper, a sausage lover, always orders them sliced on his plate. One morning, he made a drama by not eating them sliced, but whole. The problem was, they were the last of the sausages, and Kasper’s Mom didn’t have the magic power to glue them together. Kasper, crying and snorting, shouted at her to glue them together.

We also had a morning when the cup did not meet our son’s requirements, and the juice no longer tasted good.

And tell me how it is that my son loves olives in his spaghetti for days, weeks, and months, and then one day he scoops them all out without tasting them and exclaims, “Yuck.” Or how it is that my daughter can eat broccoli for a year, and then one day she throws all the broccoli off her plate.

CLOTHES PREFERENCES

I’ve heard of and experienced situations where some mornings turn into a children’s fashion show. For example, my daughter can change her leggings five times. Of course, often when we’re running late. When she finally changes into leggings, tops, and socks, leaving piles of clothes on the floor, the worst comes last. Winter boots are no longer pretty, and despite the cold and snow, summer boots are a necessity. Or on a sunny morning, she suddenly needs wellies, which she hated when it was wet and rainy.

I remember my friend bringing her son in two different shoes because he wanted them, and she, fed up with the morning drama, agreed. This made sense to me; Patrick often wears different socks, not because he doesn’t have a pair, but because he wants to wear Spiderman and Superman on the same day.

MY ADVICE AS A MORNING DRAMA SPECIALIST

Most childhood dramas are created specifically for us – parents. I can’t tell you how many morning dramas I’ve experienced with my two children, and still do. I also don’t know of any good advice that would help avoid drama in the morning. My children ultimately win most of the dramas. I, Loser Mom, replace the cup, serve spaghetti without olives, and wait for Dora to start her morning fashion show. On rainy days, I take extra rain boots to the Nursery despite Dora’s strong objections. I know Dora will have no problem wearing rain boots for a walk in the Nursery.

I’ve heard rumors that it will go away with time and the children will grow out of it, but these are just rumors, unconfirmed rumors.
